Since 1997 ‘Party Wall’ legislation has been extended beyond London under the Party Wall etc Act 1996.
It now applies to the whole of England and Wales.
The Act confers certain rights and obligations on Owners in respect of work to party walls,
excavation close to structures and construction on boundaries.
It also provides a structure for the prevention and resolution of disputes between Neighbours, through the
appointment of Surveyors who must take a practical and impartial view within the framework of the Act.
This ensures that the work is carried out in a manner that protects the rights of all parties.
