Principal Civil Engineer

Hertfordshire Office (Hemel Hempstead)

This is a permanent position within our Civil Engineering team.

As a Principal Civil Engineer, it will be your responsibility to ensure all projects are completed in a timely and cost-effective way whilst reporting progress on ongoing projects. You will be acting as a mentor to younger engineers and technicians ensuring that all work is completed in accordance with relevant best practice and standards. You will be efficient in using appropriate software and work with a complete understanding of all relevant standards. You will also have other duties including financial management, stakeholder engagement, contractor and consultancy liaison and budget holder responsibilities.  The role will be client facing and you will represent the Company externally at a senior level.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams, supervising and training engineers and technicians
  • Responsible to the Director for the financial, technical and project management control of civil engineering aspects of projects
  • Delivering and managing the preparation of design packages for projects and the negotiation through approval stages with approving bodies and highway authorities
  • Preparing plans and drawings at all stages of the development cycle for new developments and remedial / improvement schemes for existing roads
  • Preparation of reports for Flood Risk Assessments, Infrastructure Strategy, Transport Assessments / Statements and Travel Plans
  • Liaise and attend meetings with architects, clients, subcontractors and other professionals whilst carrying out duties and at all times represent the business, in a professional and courteous way
  • Undertake site visits to monitor the progress of works against specifications, and highlight issues to the contractor, client and/or (internal or external) project manager as necessary
  • Check calculations, specifications, drawings and reports produced by others, in accordance with operational procedures
  • Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of projects
  • Making sure the project complies with statutory requirements, especially health and safety

Key skills & experience

Essential

  • Minimum qualification - degree in Civil Engineering
  • At least 8 years post-qualification experience in civil engineering design
  • Proficient in use of AutoCAD and MircoDrainage
  • Proven ability to design roads, conventional drainage, SuDS and levels
  • The ability to think methodically and to solve technical problems
  • Proven ability to manage projects to deadlines and budget
  • Ability to maintain an overview of entire projects while continuing to attend to detailed design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven negotiating and influencing skills
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams to achieve desired results
  • Good knowledge of relevant technical legislation and design guidance best practice

Desirable

  • Proficient of Civils 3D/PDS, AutoTrack and Keys Signs
  • Proficient in design of earthworks cut/fill and retaining walls
